“He’ll Make You a Beast”. A look back at the work of Leo Chenko.
Leo Chenko was a former ballet dancer who drifted into designing by creating costumes for his own numbers. Chenko's customers range from ice shows to parades, and include all the usual outlets such as TV, movies and stage shows. Most were beautiful dancers who dressed up as animals for Broadway musicals, ice shows, and television programs (Perry Como's, for instance). Some of his weirdest pieces were made for Salvador Dali.
