This tantalus was passed down to me from my grandparents (a Wedding Gift to them in 1915). I am 72, so the time is right to let a new family treasure it.
The caddy has a faux pas lock on it, meaning it attaches to the caddy for the looks but does not lock, nor is there a key nor inner lock mechanisms.
The 1" high lock was associated with the caddy
for as long as I can remember in my parents
home,
and before that at my grandparents home, when I saw it swinging on the caddy.
The lock does have a maker's mark on it. On one side is written Eagle Lock Co., and on the other Terryville Conn USA.
Eagle Lock Co. of Terryville, CT, was one of the first American lock works of the early 1800's.
